Take Charge of Change 259

Enneagram Dimensions of Take Charge of Change

        Enneagram Style Ones

One leaders enjoy taking charge of change because
they are as deeply committed to organizational
improvement as they are to lifelong self-improve-
ment. In addition, Ones relish the act of breaking
large tasks into manageable pieces, then organizing
the elements into a complex plan that gets the whole
job done. The more experience the One leader has,
the larger the change efforts that he or she likes to manage.
One leaders bring their discerning minds to taking charge of
change, determining whether or not they believe a particular
change is a good idea. If they believe that it is, Ones fully embrace
the change and are bolstered by their belief that nothing that is
worth doing is impossible. Ones carefully analyze the current sit-
uation to make certain that all the issues are defined, design the
future scenario in sufficient detail that the target is clear, and then
develop a practical transition plan and process that are rigorously
implemented. Further, Ones excel as change champions, explain-
ing not only the need for change but also what the change should
look like in concrete and compelling terms.
Here’s an example of Alan explaining the reorganization to his
        staff:

Alan, a senior manager in charge of quality assurance, knew
that his team would feel overwhelmed when he told them about
the need to reorganize the division. In making this announce-
ment at a team meeting, Alan said, “As effective as we are, we
can be even more effective if we reorganize ourselves along
internal customer lines rather than quality functions. I know
you’re all working at full capacity already, so I’m going to need
all of you to help determine how we can maintain the same
level of excellence while we reorganize ourselves.”
