P. 65

The evolution of cultural studies in Australia was particularly
influenced by the decision of the government to bankroll the
Australian film industry - a decision which directly led to the revival
of Australian films in the 1970s. State-funding bodies, which
singularly determined the character of Australian films, saw films not
so much as a commercial enterprise but more as a vehicle for
representing the nation at home and abroad.

                                                  The revived film industry thus
                                                        championed an official,
                                                      conservative definition of
                                                         Australian culture by
                                               concentrating on costume drama
                                                and films that glorified European
                                                              colonial history.
