P. 70

The Beurs, French nationals
           of African origins who identify
           themselves by their cultural
           difference, pose a particular
            problem for French identity.
            Beurs have made a strong
           cultural impact on France,
            particularly with their unique
            music, a blend of Algerian
           traditional music with rock.

                                              Some theorists have argued
                                              that colonial experience
                                              means that the former French
                                              colonies do share a unique
                                              cultural relationship with
                                              France, and that French-
                                              African culture is a legitimate
                                              part of French cultural studies.
                                              But the inclusion of African
                                              culture in French cultural
                                              studies raises the question:
                                              how generalized is the French-
                                              African experience? Aren't
                                              there several ethnic
                                              groupings, subcultures and
                                              classes within the "African
                                              experience"?

                                                                         69
