France went through a radical transformation during the 1960s. A
major change was brought about by decolonization. In Vietnam, the
French were driven out by the military successes of the Viet Minh. In
North Africa, eight years of brutal war in Algeria led to its
independence from France in 1962. The famous student unrest of
1968 further radicalized French politics.
