Smart Managers—Sources of Hope,
Trust, and Faith
There are a variety of ways that managers and their organi-
zations can successfully proclaim hope, trust, and faith in their people
and their organizations. Some of those actions may look like wise
management decisions: supporting minority businesses, investing in
healthcare benefits for both full- and part-time workers, or simply pro-
moting from within. No matter how you choose to convey your belief
in a brighter tomorrow, the result will be that most employees will
become more empowered and alive with possibilities.
Top Companies That Promote High Morale with
Hope, Trust, Faith, and Belief
We’ll close this chapter on engendering hope, trust, faith, and
belief in a better tomorrow with a few examples of companies
that are doing just that.
Marriott International: At Marriott the possibilities are endless.
Hourly associates can make it to the top as senior vice presi-
dents. And why not? There’s lots of coaching in the hotel chain,
continuous educational programs, and off-site conferences to
attend.
Schering-Plough: This drug company helps minority students
learn to be lab technicians and in the process learn more about
the business and about opportunities open to them in the health
sciences professions.
Starbucks: It doesn’t matter if you’re a part-timer here. Part-
timers are valued highly and enjoy the perks of full-time bene-
fits, like medical, dental, and vision coverage.
McDonald’s: In an effort to support minority-owned businesses,
the hamburger king spends $3 billion a year (more than 27% of
its total) with minority-owned companies, such as bakeries that
supply the fast-food chain with buns.
TIAA-CREF: This top pension firm grooms minorities for execu-
tive positions by rotating workers through different depart-
