108 Boiler Plant and Distribution System Optimization Manual
————————————————————————
Perhaps this is the most important part of tuning up
a boiler—you have to do it until it’s right.
A proper tuneup requires follow-up checks
and readjustments until it is proven satisfactory.
A quick brushoff often won’t work and could
actually be dangerous .

The important elements of boiler perfor-
mance optimization:
• Be Scientific
• Identify dollar losses connected with per-
formance so that reasonable judgments can
be made about investments of time and re-
sources.
• Use good instruments
• Do regular spot checks
• Set allowable limits for performance
Figure 9.32—Another very important record is one
• Keep records
that gives a clear record of boiler exhaust tempera-
— Ideal performance ture conditions.
— Tuned-up performance
— Performance history
— Track excess air performance [Figure
9.31]
— Track CO, combustibles and smoke be-
havior
— Track exhaust temperature [Figure 9.32]
Figure 9.33—On large boilers with multiple burners,
test port locations are usually established with the
original design. Records of conditions at these loca-
tions are necessary to establish oxygen, combustibles
and pollution levels. In this case indications are that
the burners need adjustment because oxygen and CO
are out of range for good and efficient operations.
Figure 9.31—One of the records that should be es-
tablished for a boiler is the percent oxygen [or excess
air] in the exhaust
