Figure 1.4—This graphic illustrates the difference in pressure ves-
sel construction for fire tube and water tube boilers. The large
diameter drum on the left shows how large forces are developed
in the large diameter fire tube boiler drum. The advantage of the
water tube design, shown on the right, is smaller forces being de-
veloped by smaller diameter pressure parts. Fire tube boilers are
generally limited to 250 psig and under 1,000 horsepower.
