11.5.1 FERROCENE-CONTAINING AND RELATED POLYMERS
The landmark discovery of ferrocene by Kealy and Paulson in 1951 marked the beginning of mod-
ern organometallic chemistry. The first organometallic addition polymer was polyvinylferrocene
synthesized by Arimoto and Haven in 1955. While polyvinylferrocene (11.36) had been synthe-
sized, it was about another decade until the work of Pittman, Hayes and George, and Baldwin and
Johnson allowed a launch of ferrocene-containing polymers.

Fe (11.36)
A large number of vinyl organometallic monomers have been prepared, homopolymerized, and
copolymerized with classic vinyl monomers by Pittman and others. These include polymers con-
taining Mo, W, Fe, Cr (11.37), Ir, Ru, Ti (11.38), Rh (11.39), and Co.
