Exercise 2.3 Concreteness and summarizing
Role of interviewer
Interview your partner about the jobs they have done apart from studying: for example,
holiday work, part-time jobs, or occasional work in a student intermediary agency. Try to
get a clear picture about the contents of these jobs, the experiences, the dealings with
colleagues and superiors. At the end of the conversation summarize the work and ask
your partner whether the summary was accurate.
Role of interviewee
Answer the interviewer’s questions. Do not offer all the details about yourself, but give
the interviewee a chance to get a good picture of all your working activities either before
or after your studies.
Role of observer
See Appendix B on role play (pp. 186–191).
Chapter 3 Sender skills
1 Divide the group into subgroups of three people.
2 Within these subgroups divide the three people into three roles: interviewer,
interviewee and observer.
3 Hold the conversation (5 minutes).
4 Evaluate the conversation, according to the guidelines in Appendix B on role play (pp.
186–191).
Exercise 3.1 Making requests and refusing
Let each person in the trio note down a request that can be made to one of the other
persons. Then there are three rounds.
1 A makes the request to B in an assertive manner. B reacts in a subassertive manner. The
observer (C) gives feedback on the behaviour of both A and B.
2 B makes the request in a sub-assertive manner. C reacts in an aggressive manner. The
observer (A) gives feedback on the behaviour of both B and C.
3 C makes the request in an aggressive manner. A reacts in an assertive manner. The
observer (B) gives feedback on the behaviour of both A and C.
