           The squarer in Figure 11.36 can further be modified to compute the square of
        a two's-complement number. An n-bit two's-complement number x can be written
        as







           To adapt the squarer to this case, we sign-extend a two's-complement number
        to at least 2n-l bits and do not clear the SR flip-flops until the next computation is
        about to take place. Then, the squarer computes
