developing a whole range of meanings, not all of them consistent
with each other or even within themselves. And what this meant,
of course, was that when, in the guise of structuralism, a potential
theory of language and communication did emerge, it rapidly
came to mean very different things to different people. From this
epistemological diversity emerged many of the distinctive
strengths and failings of cultural studies. But that is another story
and another chapter.
