We all live in reciprocal relationships—social exchanges—
or what you might think of as person-to-person loops.
This means we cannot escape our own sphere of influ-
ence. The effect we have on the people we encounter
generally boomerangs back in our direction. We’re still
within range ourselves, still susceptible to others’ reac-
tions to our behavior, such that whatever influence we
transmit will typically soon come home to roost.
SMALL MOMENTS
The exchanges we have with other people often seem com-
plex and hard to manage. So let’s take an approach that
simplifies relationships and makes them easy to understand.
Life comes at us in small bits—tiny episodes—little stitch-
es of time that register in our minds and become the
fabric of our being. According to Nobel Prize–winner Dr.
Daniel Kahneman, we experience about 20,000 of these
individual moments in each working day. They last about
