ACTION-REACTION BEHAVIOR CYCLES
There are distinct roles and a natural rhythm in one-on-one
encounters. Regardless of who the two people are, and no
matter what the circumstances, you’re probably going to
observe the same scenario. It plays out like this: one person
acts, and the other reacts. The cycle is complete…the rela-
tionship is off and running. Pretty straightforward.
Let’s stop here for a minute. The little model on page 49—
the Action-Reaction Behavior Cycle—will help you analyze
the nature of relationships and why they develop the way
they do. It’s sort of like a social road map that shows how
the behavior traffic runs between two people. The Action-
Reaction Behavior Cycle reveals who’s doing what in one of
life’s small moments. It’s a simple diagram, but it captures
the essence of the exchange and gives a penetrating diag-
nosis of how smart we’re being in our behavior.
