nates. In this metric system all coordinates are expressed in seven
digits. Easting coordinates are arbitrarily assigned a minimum value of
2,000,000 m and can go as high as 3,000,000 m (Fig. 5.8). Northing coor-
dinates are assigned a minimum value of 5,000,000 m, much larger
than the maximum easting, to avoid overlapping with easting coordi-
nates. Therefore, northing is easily distinguishable from easting no
matter which one is stated first.
