and its position is controlled by a special stepper drive. The S
controller electronics and drive motor are located on the back-
side of the frame.
Figure 5-75 shows a magnetic core memory. These were Z
used in early computers instead of the solid-state memory that X
is used today. The core is made from a magnetic permeable
material. Depending on the orientation of the magnetic poles,
the computer will interpret either a 1 or a 0. The pole state is
controlled by wires Z and X. Wires S and Y are used to sense Y
