Power Generation From Renewable Energy Sources 159

              11.1.3 Projected MSW Profile
India is a developing, cultural, and educational country. Due to the speedy
development of country in terms of motorization and industrialization,
mankind has started to migrate to city places from rural areas. Therefore,
almost all cities have undergone expansions. Such expansion started to in-
crease large quantity of waste. It is estimated that a small scale industry can
produce nearly about 50–100 kg of waste per week and it is about 25–50
times higher for large scale industry. In addition, waste accumulation from
residential places is not neglected because plastics, papers, and other un-
wanted materials are mainly accumulated in residential places. This may
lead to hazardous happenings in terms of air and soil pollution. Collection
of waste not only includes plastics and papers, but also consists of organic
materials. Hence, they produce methane and toxic leachates into air and
ground water. Therefore, Government of India has started to impose legal
and tax penalties. The total accumulation of municipal waste at our city
(Hubli-Dharwar city) is about more than 20–30 tons per week.
Today, plastics have achieved a major place in society due to their lower
cost and ease of handling. Plastics utilization in modem life is more conve-
nient because of its significant differences in the properties when compared
to other sources. Their use has been associated with buildings, transporta-
tion, recreation, packaging, house hold appliances, furniture, and production
of synthetic textiles and construction. Therefore, plastic play a major role in
giving better feasible solutions in all engineering fields compared to other
types. Therefore, its use nowadays is becoming more and more dangerous
because plastic is a nonbiodegradable substance and it takes about more
than 100 years to decay. Hence, pollution due to its use is utmost important
and needs to be addressed adequately.
If the waste such as biomass and plastics are utilized for energy applica-
tions or preprocessing of MSW to useful product or fuel using gasification
process, it can restore at least 5% coal used for electricity generation. In view
of this, Government of India has put into practice several policies toward
              this solid waste management.

              11.2 PRESENT WORK

The review of literature shows the fuel reactivity has significant effect on
enhancing CI engine performance and also showed that the effect of fuel
oil on the performance of producer gas-diesel/biodiesel dual fuel engine
has been less investigated. Hence, this area needs detailed investigation.
