3.20 DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES
1926.52. This section deals with occupational noise exposure with permissible limits
identified.
1926.53. When the use of radioactive materials or xrays is involved at construction sites,
the requirements of this section are applicable.
1926.54. This section deals with the installation, use, and operation of laser equipments
at the sites.
1926.55. Gases, vapors, fumes, dusts, and mists are dealt with in this section. Threshold
limit values of airborne contaminants for construction are given.
1926.56. All construction areas, corridors, offices, storage, etc. shall be lighted according
to the minimum illumination intensities given in a table.
1926.57. At construction sites, if dusts, fumes, gases, mists, and vapors are produced,
proper ventilation is required and threshold limits are indicated. It deals with the following:
• Local exhaust ventilation
• Design and operation of exhaust system
• Duration of operations of the exhaust system
• Disposal of exhaust materials
• Requirements of abrasive blasting
• Requirements of grinding, polishing, and buffing operations
• Requirements of spray finishing operations
1926.60. If there is a presence of methylenedianiline at the construction sites, the require-
ments of this section are enforced.
1926.62. If construction workers are exposed to lead, the requirements of this section are
enforced. It deals with lead contamination, removal, exposure limits, protection of employ-
ees, monitoring of lead at the site, respiratory protection of employees, housekeeping
including showers, hygiene facilities, etc.
1926.64. Requirements for preventing or minimizing the consequences of catastrophic
releases of toxic, reactive, flammable, and explosive chemicals are provided.
1926.65. Safety precautions and other requirements related to hazardous waste opera-
tions and emergency response are provided.
Subpart E: Personal Protective and Lifesaving Equipment
This subpart deals with personal protective and lifesaving equipment.
1926.95. Criteria for personal protection equipment for eyes, face, head, and extremities;
protective clothing; etc. are given. Instructions for maintenance and sanitation of such
equipment are provided.
1926.96. It deals with safety toe footwear for employees.
