CONSTRUCTION SAFETY CODES, STANDARDS, AND REGULATIONS 3.23

             Subpart K: Electrical
This subpart deals with safety requirements of electrical work in construction. The require-
ments are divided into four major categories.

             Installation Safety Requirements
1926.402. This defines where the standards could be applied.
1926.403. This section deals with general requirements. It has provisions for
approval, examination, installation, and use of equipment; interrupting ratings; mounting
and cooling of equipment; splices; arcing parts; marking; identification of disconnecting
means; and circuits greater and less than 600 V.
1926.404. This section deals with wiring design and protection. It has provision for
use and identification of grounded and grounding conductors, branch circuits, outside con-
ductors and lamps, services, overcurrent protection, grounding, etc.
1926.405. This section deals with wiring, methods, components, and equipment for
general use. Provisions are given for wiring methods, cabinets, boxes and fittings, knife
switches, switchboards and panel boards, enclosure for damp or wet locations, conductors
for general wiring, flexible cords and cables, portable cables over 600 V, fixture wires, and
             equipment for general use.
1926.406. This section deals with specific-purpose equipment and installation. It has
provisions for cranes and hoists, elevators, escalators and moving walks, electric welders,
             and x ray equipment.
1926.407. This section deals with hazardous (classified) locations.
1926.408. It deals with special systems, greater than 600 V; class 1, class 2, and class
3 remote control, signaling, and power-limited circuits; communication systems.

             Safety-Related Work Practices
1926.416. Provisions are given for protecting employees, passageways and open
spaces, load ratings, fuses, and cords and cables.
1926.417. This section has general requirements for lockout and tagging of circuits. It
deals with controls, equipment, and tags.
             Safety-Related Maintenance and Environmental Considerations
1926.431. Provisions for maintenance of equipment are given.
1926.432. This section deals with environmental deterioration of equipment.
             Safety Requirements for Special Equipment
1926.441. It deals with batteries and battery charging.

             Subpart L: Scaffolds
This subpart deals with all types of scaffolds except crane- or derrick-suspended personnel
             platforms.

1926.451. The requirements of the capacity of the scaffold and its components are pro-
vided. This section also provides general requirements for scaffold platform construction.
In addition, it provides criteria for supported and suspended scaffolds. This section deals
with access to the scaffold for all employees during its use at the site. Criteria for the use
of the scaffold at the site are also given.
Lastly, the issue of fall protection is addressed for employees using the scaffold. Some
of the highlights related to the capacity of the scaffold are as follows:
