For this example we’re installing VMware Server. That and other flavors of VMware can
be located via Link 13-8.
Installation
Installation is as straightforward as installing most any Windows application:
1. Go to the VMware download site and click the link that allows you to register. Once
you provide some information, your serial number will be e-mailed to you.
2. Double-click the VMware Server icon to install.
3. In the VMware installation wizard, click Next to start.
4. Accept the license agreement and click Next.
5. Click Next again to start a default complete installation.
NOTE If you are installing VMware on a Windows XP client for any reason, you’ll get a warning
message advising against the practice, but you can click away the warning and proceed. If you
are performing a Windows XP install, be aware that VMware won’t support it. Naturally, you
won’t install VMware on production equipment as a rule, but you may try it if you’re
repurposing an old machine.
6. You’re given the option to enter the default folder destination. Click Next.
7. If Autorun is enabled on your machine, you’ll get a warning message that
recommends disabling it. Take the default action of disabling Autorun and
then click Next.
8. Click Install to begin the installation process.
9. Once the installation is complete, you are asked to provide customer information,
including your username and a serial number. The serial number was provided
earlier in the process, so enter it here and click Enter.
10. Restart the server.
When the server has been restarted, open the newly installed server to see two icons
added to your Start menu: VMware Server Console and Manage Virtual Networks.
Clicking the first icon brings up the VMware Server Console – Connect to Host dialog,
which is shown in Figure 13-5.
NOTE The VMware Server Console also allows you to connect to remote virtual servers as well as
local ones.
Create a Virtual Server
To create a new virtual server, follow these steps:
1. Click OK to connect to your local host VMware system. Then click the New Virtual
Machine link, as shown in Figure 13-6.
2. This starts the New Virtual Machine Wizard.
