130 Properties of Adhesion Promoters

Recommended applications: most acrylic and similar latex emulsion based adhesives, and water-
borne epoxy/urethane, coatings on: metal, plastic, wood; adhesives to metal, wood, plastic (treated
PP/PE, Mylar), water-borne coatings having a pH of 7-11 including coatings formulated with
acrylic/styrenated acrylic latex emulsions, and water-borne polymer dispersions of alkyds, epox-
ies, urethanes, and others. Used as an adhesion promoter in polysulfides and phenolic resins for
abrasives and insulating materials and as a primer for sealants, adhesives and coatings. Mainly
used as a surface modifier for glass fibers, glass-fiber fabrics, fillers (e.g., glass or mineral wool,
mica, talc, wollastonite, kaolin, cristobalite, metal oxides) and pigments used in various plastics,
including epoxy resins, polyamides, polyacrylates, polyurethanes, ethylene/vinyl acetate copoly-
            mers and many others.
            Processing methods: high shear mixing
            Typical dose: 0.01-5 wt%
            Food approval (FDA): FDA 175.105, 176.300, 177.1390, 177.2465
Conditions to avoid: contact with moisture must be avoided during processing to prevent unde-
sired hydrolysis with moisture must be avoided to prevent undesired hydrolysis
