Meredith Marra
is a lecturer in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Vic-
toria University of Wellington. As Research Officer for the Language in the
Workplace Project, her research interests include the language of meetings and
the use and function of humour in workplace interactions.
Christiane Meierkord
is Professor in the English department (applied linguistics section) at University
of Münster, Germany. Her research interests include World Englishes, spoken
English, intercultural communication, and interlanguages. She currently inves-
tigates Englishes in post-apartheid South Africa.
Miriam Meyerhoff
is Professor of Sociolinguistics at the University of Edinburgh. She works on
language and gender, and variation in creoles. She is co-editor with Janet Holmes
of the Handbook of Language and Gender.
Jonathan Newton
is a senior lecturer in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies
(LALS), Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and an associate in the
Language in the Workplace Project.
Ingrid Piller
is Pofessor at the Macquarie University Australia. She is an applied sociolin-
guist, who works on English as a global language, multilingualism and language
learning. She is currently writing a textbook on Intercultural Communication
for Edinburgh University Press.
Elisabeth Prechtl
studied psychology at the University of Bamberg (Germany) and Université
Catholique de l’Ouest (Angers, France) 1995–2001, after which she worked at
an SME institute associated to the University of Bayreuth. Since November
2005 she has been a consultant within the Audi Academy (Ingolstadt, Ger-
many). She is currently doing PhD research on the validation of an intercultural
assessment centre.
Martin Reisigl
teaches applied linguistics at the University of Vienna and works on a research
project supported by research fellowships of the German Alexander von Hum-
boldt Foundation and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (APART). His research
interests include discourse analysis, text linguistics, sociolinguistics, rhetoric
and semiotics.
