Chapter 3
Oil refinery
3.1 Section introduction
This section provides the reader a basic understanding of the fundamentals
and the operating relationship between the plant equipment in an oil refin-
ery and covers the craft labor for the assemblyand fielderectionrequired
to put the equipment into operation in an oil refinery. The oil refinery or
petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is trans-
formed and refined into more useful products. Oil refineries are large
industrial complexes with extensive piping running throughout, carrying
product between chemical processing units. The crude oil feedstock has
been processed by an oil production plant. There is an oil depot at or near
an oil refinery for the storage of incoming crude oil feedstock and bulk liq-
uid products. Petroleum refineries have many different processing units and
auxiliary facilities. Each refinery has its own arrangement and combination
of refining process determined by the location, desired products, and eco-
nomic considerations.
