10.4 DEVELOPMENT OF AnMBR AND EVALUATION
STUDIES UNDERTAKEN
Considering all the benefits of the technology, AnMBR was developed with
the following objectives in mind:
1. An AnMBR design with the most suitable configuration, using a side
stream membrane module for the treatment of low-strength wastewater
2. Optimization studies on the OLR for the treatment of low-strength
wastewater, with the goal of achieving effluent COD below 30 mg/L
and BOD 5 less than 10 mg/L
3. Exploration of the biological performance of the side stream AnMBR for
removal of organics during long-term operation
4. Evaluation of the membrane filtration performance and fouling fre-
quency in the long-term operation of AnMBR
5. Identification of the challenges inherent in the continuous operation of
the AnMBR
6. Future research scope and directions.
