used as a heat source in water heating bath. A temperature display along with
controller supplied by Electronics Systems and Devices, Pune, was provided
in the control panel of the unit. A pH probe supplied by Hanna Instruments
was mounted at the bottom of the bioreactor for the measurement of pH. An
acid and alkali dosing arrangement was put in place for the control of pH. A
Hanna make pH display along with controller was provided in the control
panel of the unit. A two-stage blade-type agitator was provided at the top of
the bioreactor for agitation purposes. A flange-mounted, 2 HP variable
speed motor supplied by Crompton Greaves was used as a drive for the agi-
tator. The agitator speed display (make—Electronics Systems and Devices,
Pune; model—ESD 9010) and variable frequency drive (Schneider make)
for changing the speed of agitator were used in the control panel of the
setup. A 2000L capacity feed tank was fabricated in mild steel and used
for feed storage purposes. A drain connection with a ball valve was provided
at the bottom of the feed tank for draining and cleaning purposes. A
self-priming centrifugal pump (make—Compton Greaves; model—Ministar
III) was used for the pumping of feed to the bioreactor. A magnetic-
float-operated guided level switch supplied by Pune Techtrol Pvt. Ltd.,
Pune (model—FGSO-J12O1WWW) was mounted in the bioreactor for
maintaining the required water level in the reactor. The electrical signals
from the level switch were used for the operation and control of the feed
pump. The generated biogas collected in the head space of the bioreactor
was taken out of the bioreactor and stored in the variable volume dome
arrangement. Stored biogas was burned using a biogas burner on a
daily basis.
10.4.1.2 Membrane Filtration Unit
A skid-mounted membrane filtration system consists of membranes, sewage
pumps, rotameters, and UPVC piping. Tubular ultra-filtration membrane
modules supplied by Berghof Germany were used in this study. Two Ber-
ghof membrane modules were used in series configuration in the filtration
unit. A half HP sewage pump was used to push the water from the bioreactor
into the membrane unit. A 4 HP sewage pump was used for recirculating the
treated water through the membrane unit. Rotameters fabricated in acrylic
material were used for the measurement of recirculation flow and
permeate flow.
The necessary information relating to the membrane modules used for the
study is given in Table 10.3 in the form of a membrane data sheet. Figure 10.8
shows the photograph of the experimental setup used for the study.
