valve had started to fail. This timely detection prevented any RO cata-
strophic damage, stopping unnecessary water loss, and most importantly,
avoiding unplanned RO shut down to fix the valve.
3D TRASAR Technology for Membranes is able to provide immediate
tangible benefits, such as increased water and wastewater savings through
accurate monitoring of recovery, particularly if the actual recovery of the
RO system is less than designed. Through a need-based cleaning approach
and this technology, it may be possible to decrease the cleaning frequency
and still protect the membranes, thereby resulting in less frequent replace-
              ment of membranes.
Because of its ability to proactively monitor the system, the technology
helps address issues such as those pertaining to water quality, even before
they can impact the process performance or product quality. This is reflected
in the minimized costs or consequences associated with poor quality of the
final product. The technology allows the RO system to operate at a different
(or lower) feed water quality. The downtime can be reduced, thereby low-
ering the impact of lost production associated with unplanned shutdowns
due to membrane fouling. The technology helps to maximize the capital uti-
lization by producing the maximum possible product at just the right quality
              from the existing RO system.
              11.4 SUMMARY
3D TRASAR Technology for Sugar is a fluorescence-based monitoring
technology that is able to detect the condensate quality variations with high
sensitivity and selectivity and provide early detection. The technology
enables reliable reuse of vapor condensate as boiler makeup, cooling tower
makeup, or other sections of the plant with the assurance that only good
              quality condensate is reused.
3D TRASAR Technology for Membranes is a multidimensional solu-
tion that integrates multiple components including hardware, chemicals,
and remote and on-site services. Hardware collects operational data for per-
formance analysis, web reporting, and data management. The equipment is
customized to handle a variety of RO system configurations and can be
upgraded as changes are made to operating conditions or process equipment.
It controls antiscalant dose and pH. The bisulfite addition is also controlled
to prevent accidental oxidation of the membrane. The technology is
designed to achieve optimal membrane system performance.
