Figure 11.17 ORP control and discovery of problems in sulfite dosing system.
With 3D TRASAR Technology for Membranes in place, the operator
was able to get a better handle on the system, which was being monitored
24/7. Nalco 360 Service was able to detect occasional ORP surges and pro-
vide further investigative suggestions that led to the discovery that the sulfite
dosing pump was malfunctioning (Figure 11.17). This led to protection of
              $10,600 worth of membranes.
              11.3.3.2 Water Recovery Control
Prior to implementing 3D TRASAR technology, recovery rates were sacri-
ficed. The RO system was being operated at only 60% recovery to obtain
stable water production. The relatively low recovery was due to the high
conductivity in feed water and high scaling potential at the high pH
employed by the system (to prevent excess carbon dioxide from leaking into
the permeate). There was a desire to increase recovery, but the existing
monitoring system was insufficient to track and detect potential system
              failures.
