29 Flaking
29.1 Description
Flaking is a defect where a small piece of plastic is shaved from a part and in turn
leads to a surface defect on the part. Flaking often comes during automatic degat-
ing with gates such as sub gates and cashew gates, or from flash on pins, lifters, or
slides. Figure 29.1 shows a magnified photo of a flake that was molded onto the
surface of a part.
