Chapter Reminders—How to Take Action 209
Chapter 6: Forming Your Own Board of Directors
• Consider Three Kinds of Business Relationships
• Operational Network—people who can help you do your
job and manage your internal responsibilities
• Personal Network—people who help you learn and
develop in your profession beyond your day-to-day work-
like professional associations, alumni groups, or personal
interest committees
• Strategic Network—people who have a broader business
perspective and contacts that can help you better achieve
both personal and organizational goals—now and in the
future
• Identify Your Own Personal Board of Directors
• People you respect and trust
• People who care about you and your success
• People who have different business/career perspectives
• People who can be a “connector” for you
• People who have a greater knowledge of an area than you do
• People who can influence others on your behalf
• People both inside and outside your organization
• Actively Build Your Networks
• Identify people to connect or reconnect with now
• Identify desired outcomes for each engagement
• Identify the best way to approach each individual
• Address any fears that might stop you
• Consider the Law of Reciprocity—how can you help the
other person?
• Pursue the relationship with integrity, intention, and
authenticity
