Wednesday/Thursday for a few months?”

The Virtual Commuter
The Motivational Mindset
■ These days, many offices are virtual.
■ Though working off-site has become an acceptable standard
for many, transitioning from the traditional office may be
difficult.
■ Virtual commuting can be combined with physical office time.
■ Many managers are satisfied as long as the work gets done.
Hours logged may be less important than results.
■ You will need to be sensitive to the unique communication
issues that arise between virtual commuters and those
working in-house.
■ Virtual commuters should be treated with the same respect
and support as people who are physically in the office.
■ If the number of hours logged by an off-site employee is
important, create a uniform, consistent system for recording.
■ Some people in the office may treat off-site employees
as second-class citizens; it is important for everyone to
understand that virtual commuters are an important part of
the team.
■ Just as those in the office chat periodically, an occasional
friendly e-mail, instant message, or telephone chat with the
virtual commuter is good for mental health and team spirit.
