work them out as we all adjust.”
The Naysayer
The Motivational Mindset
■ The naysayer can affect the energy and motivation of a team.
■ Don’t fall into the trap of treating the naysayer as the Boy Who
Cried Wolf. Sometimes there really is a wolf.
■ Positive attitudes spread—so do negative ones.
■ Sometimes the naysayer just needs to be validated and is
willing to come onboard after feeling heard and appreciated.
■ Naysayers are often unaware of the frequency and/or impact
of their negative comments.
■ Model ways to deflect the naysayer’s comments.
■ Offer suggestions and model ways for the naysayer to turn
negative approaches or phrases into positive ones.
■ Talk with the naysayer about his/her negativity (using
specifics) and its effect on others.
■ Understand that you may not be able to encourage someone
to change an ingrained habit or personality trait. However, the
positive environment you create will help bring balance and
may begin to turn the naysayer around.
