The Part-Time Employee
The Motivational Mindset
■ The part-time employee needs to feel as much a part of the
team as the full-time staff. A part-time commitment is still a
commitment.
■ Ensure that part-timers know their roles are critical to
customer satisfaction and company success.
■ Include part-time employees as much as possible in office
meetings and celebrations.
■ Mentors help part-timers learn their jobs and help them see
their work in the context of the bigger picture.
■ Some organizations are entirely staffed by part-timers because
of customer needs or business demands.
■ Part-timers may be overqualified but need the scheduling
convenience of part-time work. Know who’s working in your
midst and access talent.
■ Consider small incentives. Offer a gift card or cash reward for
perfect on-time attendance, outstanding customer service,
or any other one-time or ongoing behavior you would like to
reinforce.
■ Ensure that part-time employees have all the information they
need to represent your company or department effectively.
Don’t just give them “need to know” information.
■ Often part-timers report to more than one supervisor. Ensure
a consistent message regarding work, policies, and customer
care. Also ensure that all supervisors understand the need to
coordinate priorities when sharing the support of part time
workers.
■ Share with your part-timers the mechanics behind juggling
schedules. Part-time work is not a casual commitment.
