phase-locked loops, as well as a further palette of software-based techniques
such as Fourier analysis, Kalman filtering, and maximum-likelihood techniques.
However, none seems to have quite the same characteristics of simple analysis
and straightforward hardware realizations, so perhaps this is the reason for its
great appeal. On the other hand it may be just chance, in the same way that
Fourier analysis is so ubiquitous in science teaching, while the use of other
orthonormal sets is so rare.
