524 Refining Biomass Residues for Sustainable Energy and Bioproducts
Two state-owned companies carry out the activities on behalf of the state, which
are as follows:
The National Regulatory Authority of the Electricity Sector of Ivory Coast (ANARE-CI)
whose role is to regulate the electricity sector
The Energy Company of Cˆ ote d’Ivoire (CI-ENERGIES) whose role is to ensure the plan-
ning of the supply and demand of the electricity and the monitoring of the electrical
energy and financial movements
The electricity sector in Cˆ ote d’Ivoire currently comprises four private operators,
including three independent electricity producers (CIPREL, AZITO Energie, and
Aggreko) and one that operates the works of the country, the Ivorian Company of
Electricity.
The natural gas supply of the Cˆ ote d’Ivoire thermal plants is currently provided
by three gas operators (Foxtrot International, Petroci, and CNR).
24.1.2 Installed electricity capacity
In 2017 the installed capacity of the electricity sector in Cˆ ote d’Ivoire is 2198 MW,
distributed as follows: 1319 MW in thermal (60%) and 879 MW in hydroelectricity
(40%). The maximum peak recorded is 1342 MW (Autorite ´ Nationale de
Re ´gulation du Secteur de l’Electricite ´ de Cˆ ote ‘Ivoire (ANARE-CI), 2017).
24.1.3 Access to electricity
At the end of 2017 the number of electrified localities is 4614 out of a total of
8513, that is, a coverage rate (ratio between the number of electrified localities and
the number of total localities) of 54% (Autorite ´ Nationale de Re ´gulation du Secteur
de l’Electricite ´ de Cˆ ote ‘Ivoire (ANARE-CI), 2017).
24.1.4 Challenges with electricity access
Some remote areas in Cˆ ote d’Ivoire are not covered by the interconnected grid. For
these areas the electricity needs of people are met by diesel generators. There are
some risks with the use of diesel as fossil fuel, which include the threat to the elec-
tricity supply of these areas because of the instability of diesel fuel price and the
increase of greenhouse gas emissions, causing global warming and its disastrous
consequences. These risks make renewable energy a major concern for decision
makers of Cˆ ote d’Ivoire electricity sector (Autorite ´ Nationale de Re ´gulation du
Secteur de l’Electricite ´ de Cˆ ote ‘Ivoire (ANARE-CI), 2017).
24.2 Jatropha curcas presentation
Among the solutions that could be considered for improving electricity access
mainly for the remote areas in Cˆ ote d’Ivoire, there is Jatropha biodiesel used as
energy source by the diesel generators.
