ITEM RECOMMENDATION
Improve separation of Improved separation of paper waste could
paper waste streams (white generate approximately $6434 annually
ledger and newspaper) Please contact waste management for more details,
once the improved recycling program has been
implemented
Purchase a plastic-washing As mentioned previously, the facility could potentially
system to clean contaminated generate approximately $10,733 annually ($8225 from
scrap polypropylene plastic sale of polypropylene plastic and $2508 from waste
Or hauling reduction). The feasibility of purchasing a
Sell contaminated scrap plastic-washing system should be explored. The cleaned
polypropylene plastic to scrap plastic could also be used in place of virgin material
local recycler for additional savings
Local recyclers contacted by the waste assessment
team would pay between $0.03 and $0.08 per pound
depending on the type, grade, form, and contamination
of the polypropylene plastic scrap
Improve labeling on recycling Improved labeling will avoid mixing and contaminating
containers of recycling containers
Use monthly in-plant newsletter Use the monthly plant newsletter to promote
to increase environmental recycling and increase awareness. Discuss issues
awareness among employees regarding the recycling procedure at the plant, the
current recycling rates, drop off locations, and
recycling providers
34.8 Exemplary Performers and
Industry Leaders—Zero Landfill Plants
Subaru is celebrating its 3-year anniversary of zero landfill status at its manufacturing
plant, Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) and the sale of its 100,000th PZEV (partial
zero emissions) vehicle.
Both milestones reflect the long-standing commitment Subaru has to safeguard the
environment that so many of its customers avidly enjoy.
“We are pleased to mark these milestones,” said Tomohiko Ikeda, chairman, presi-
dent, and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “At Subaru, we are committed to not only
maintain an effective environmental management system, but also to integrate sound
environmental practices throughout our business.”
