IEQ Prerequisite 2: Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) Control
The purpose of this prerequisite is to prevent secondhand smoke from going into areas
other than designated or desired smoking areas of buildings.

USGBC Rating System
LEED-NC 2.2 lists the Intent, Requirements, and Potential Technologies and Strategies
for IEQp2 as follows, with modifications as noted to update to LEED 2009:

Intent
Prevent or minimize exposure of building occupants, indoor surfaces, and ventilation air
distribution systems to Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS).
Requirements
Case 1. All Projects (As per LEED 2009)
OPTION 1
• Prohibit smoking in the building.
• Locate any exterior designated smoking areas at least 25 feet away from entries,
outdoor air intakes and operable windows. (LEED 2009 requires signage to allow
smoking and/or prohibit smoking in designated areas, or prohibit smoking totally.)
OR
OPTION 2
• Prohibit smoking in the building except in designated smoking areas.
• Locate any exterior designated smoking areas at least 25 feet away from entries,
outdoor air intakes and operable windows. (LEED 2009 requires signage to allow
