10.1 Installation
Improper installation of pumps can lead to premature failure and
increased maintenance costs. However, when correctly installed and
given reasonable care and maintenance, they will operate satisfactorily
for a long period of time. The majority of the guidelines detailed in this
Chapter apply to a typical horizontal, end suction, single stage
centrifugal pump.
10.1.1 t0cati0n
When planning the location of the pump, give some consideration to
the people who will eventually have to look after that piece of
equipment. Wherever possible, all pumps should be located in an area
where there is ample space around the pump to provide easy access and
working room for routine maintenance. Adequate overhead space
should also be available for lifting devices and working clearance. While
suction and discharge piping should be as short as possible to minimize
friction losses, they should have sufficient space to ensure that correct
piping practices can be followed. Further details on pump piping are
provided in Chapter 10.2.
10.1.2 Receiving
Upon receipt of a pump on site, the unit should be carefully inspected
for damage and checked against the bill of lading. Report any damage
or shortages to the carrier's local representative and send a copy to the
pump supplier. When uncrating, be careful not to discard any small
accessories that may be attached.
