The Toolbar
Once clips have been placed in a sequence, they may be manipulated
using any of these most commonly used tools found in The Toolbar:
The Arrow Tool selects a single clip in a sequence. The Track Select
Tool selects an entire track forward, reverse, both directions, or multi-
138 ple tracks forward through repeated taps on the T key. The Razor Blade
Tool divides single or multiple clips in half. The Zoom Tool magnifies
or shrinks the entire timeline view.
Part 2: The NLE Process
Now that you have been introduced to the basic elements of the FCP
interface, I would like to guide you through a sample news story edit
session using Final Cut Pro. Once your video is shot, captured, and
placed in a project, the real fun begins: the editing process itself. Typ-
ically, you or your videographer will have shot an interview or two,
some “B” roll (video images shot to accompany reporter or anchor
script), perhaps a public speech, or simply a “stand-up” with you talk-
ing directly to the camera. These elements can be quickly combined
in FCP to produce an exciting, informative “package” (assuming that
your source material is exciting and informative).
