Part 1: The FCP Interface
Incoming clips for Fit to Fill Edits will therefore be speeded up or slowed
down to match the length of the current clip.
The final Canvas Window “drag-and-drop” technique, the Superim-
pose Edit, places an incoming clip in the layer immediately above the
current target layer. The incoming clip for a Superimpose Edit must be
at least as long as the distance from the playback head location in the
timeline to the end of the last clip in the upper layer. If an incoming
clip is shorter than this distance, an error message will appear stating
“Insufficient content for edit.” Any transparent areas of an incoming
clip placed with a Superimpose Edit command will “composite” with
clips on lower layers (e.g., Photoshop still graphics or video clips with
alpha channels—see the discussion later in this chapter on filters and
transitions for more details).
On the bottom edge of the Canvas Window are the Timeline VTR
Controls. Left to right, the controls are Go to the
IN Point of the sequence , Play IN to OUT , Play , Play
Around Current Frame , and Go to the OUT Point . (Note that 137
the Go to the IN Point and the Go to the OUT Point arrows point in
the opposite direction here from those found in the Capture Window.
This is because here we are interested in the IN and OUT points of an
entire sequence, instead of a single clip.
On either side of the Canvas Window VTR Controls are the
sequence Jog and Shuttle Controls. The
Jog Control may be “scrubbed” side to side with the mouse allowing
you to view the sequence at the playback head position one frame at
a time. The Shuttle Control allows the playback head to move at very
high speed to quickly navigate an entire sequence in the timeline.
The Viewer Window
Anytime during the editing process, individual clips may be viewed
in the Viewer Window, normally located to the immediate left of the
Canvas Window. When a clip located in the Browser or Timeline Win-
dows is double-clicked, it is immediately available for viewing. Viewed
clips that are already on the Timeline, and thus part of a sequence, will
have an indicator like this: in the Viewer Timeline Area along the
bottom edge of Viewer. VTR controls, similar to those found on the
Canvas Window are located here as well. The Viewer Window also has
