In order to solve the rational formula, the determination of several interdependent
criteria is necessary to calculate the peak flow. The criteria items are the measurement of
the area contributing to the flow into one or many drainage inlets, the various different
surfaces composing the contributing area, and the rate of rainfall produced by the design
storm.
