                      integration

advantages for customers, energy suppliers, TSOs and DSOs. The prominent
benefits are decreased energy consumption due to integration of remote mon-
itoring and control features, more accurate and short-term billing for customers
in short-term intervals. On the other hand, the improvements of smart metering
processes allow customer to comprise their own DER based microgrid plants
and to receive pay back against their consumption. Thus, the energy costs
and bills are gradually decreased with the aid of HEMS integration to residential
network. The benefits of energy suppliers and DSOs are also related to costs and
billing issues where metering costs and efforts are seriously decreased due to
             instant and two-way connection.
The peak demand and peak price may also be decreased regarding to outputs
of decision making and estimation algorithms. The evaluated consumption and
demand data facilitates improvement of DSM and DR programs and provides
better planning of generation, transmission and maintenance schedules. It also
provides prevention on fraud and thefts [6]. The architectures and specific
features of area networks will be presented in detail in the following chapter.
The communication is crucial component of smart metering and has played
an important role in the evolution of smart electricity metering that has been
             discussed in the following section.
