P. 155

■ Separating sick days, personal days, and vacation impedes
            flexibility.
          ■ Packages allow employees with minimal health problems to
be available for ailing parents or sick children. Packages also
            simplify tracking and paperwork.
          ■ Packages eliminate the employee’s need to justify time off.
          ■ Allowing personal and vacation days to roll over from one year
to the next is a small thing that can make a big difference for
someone who would like to plan for an extended holiday or a
reasonable length of time to visit distant relatives.
          ■ Rollovers and packages work well for employees who would
be penalized by losing days off when the year ends. Not
            everyone works the system.
          ■ Rollover eliminates a sudden employee shortage during the
            month of December.
          ■ Do you praise employees for coming in horrendously sick?
Would the company really fold if they stayed home? How
productive are they? What mistakes might result from a
groggy work state? How many work hours are lost when
others catch the bug and have to stay home? If someone’s that
sick, recommend bed rest (and maybe some soup).
