■ Your office must be organized in a way that everyone can
understand. No one person should be the only one who can
find anything.
■ Even people who can keep everything in their heads without
ever writing anything down get sick, take vacations, and move
on. Good organization is something someone else can pick up
on when necessary.
■ Scrambling to find things wastes time and, depending on the
urgency of the item, can raise the stress level of everyone in
the vicinity. Improving organizational skills improves time
management and reduces stress.
■ Good organizational skills reduce the risk of missed deadlines
or last-minute rushes.
■ People with strong organizational skills get things done.
Others are so busy organizing that they spend more time
arranging planners than doing actual work. Learn to recognize
the difference so you can support people and get them on the
right track.
■ Some people are very good at their jobs but are hindered by
a lack of organization. Don’t stifle creative people by saddling
them with rigorous organizational systems, but encourage
everyone to use a system that works for them.
■ Be open to new technology that can organize, sync calendars,
and back up computer files. If your employees are more
comfortable with new methods that would be improvements
on the old, let them train you.
■ For critical data, back up your backup.
