Flexibility
The Motivational Mindset
■ Change is life; it is the natural state of all things. A work
environment that does not change stagnates.
■ Complaining about change sets a counterproductive tone.
Instead, determine ways to work with the change.
■ Embrace change enthusiastically, and encourage others to
recognize inherent opportunities.
■ Fear of change is a learned response, but even learned
responses can be changed. Model a positive response.
■ Every time a new employee joins a company or department,
the dynamic changes slightly. Stay in tune with those changes
to help your employees maintain a positive direction.
■ Being flexible means remaining open to suggestions and
being willing to change your plan or direction if change is
best—whether or not it’s comfortable.
■ Change, even positive change, can be a major cause of stress
for many people. Our reactions to change, not the change,
cause us stress. Be open to new ideas and approaches.
Encourage that openness in others.
■ Stressing out or stewing over a problem does not bring about
change. Explore options and be proactive.
■ Don’t rush to judgment, good or bad; evaluate the situation
and consider possible courses of action. We have all
experienced so-called blessings in disguise.
■ Once a policy change is in place and you know the time for
questioning it is over, help those who report to you accept it
and move on.
