Introduction
very week, 2.5 million new people become job seekers
Eand face the daunting task of interviewing for a job. In
fact, statistics show that most Americans will change jobs
upwards of 10 times during their careers—which means
that they endure at least 10 job-related interviews, and this
doesn’t include some jobs that require more than one inter-
view! Here’s another sobering fact: The average job search
takes between three and nine months.
But you don’t care about how difficult it is for everyone
else to get a job; all you care about is getting your next job.
This book can help you because it’s different from the dozens
of other job-hunting guides on library and bookstore shelves
in two important ways. First, most of the so-called experts
who wrote those other books have never actually hired anyone.
Some are lawyers or academics, whereas others are career
coaches who take an outsider’s point of view. Many are
human resources specialists who play a gate-keeping role
during the job-hunting process but who aren’t the ultimate
decision makers.
In contrast, as a sales and training manager, I have con-
ducted thousands of interviews and hired hundreds of peo-
ple over my 40-year career—and I know what interviewers
want. I have been in the position of the hiring manager (many,
many times!), having to choose the best person for the job—
and holding the fate of the interviewee in my hands. In my
consulting practice, I have trained hundreds of people
to become successful at the art of the interview. I have
worked with people at every career phase, from entry-level
