                      BOX 4-3  Cartoon Videos

                      Boys play football. Girls play with dolls. Boys should be tough. Girls
                      should be sweet and always look nice.
                         Debunking such stereotypes is the mission of two 20-minute videos for
                      Program H (Once Upon a Boy; see Figure 4-3) and Program M (Once Upon
                      a Girl; see Figure 4-4). Designed for universal understanding by using only
                      visuals with no words, the films generate discussion among facilitated
                      groups of young men or women and seek to deconstruct gender




































                        FIGURE 4-3 Once Upon a Boy: Created to provide an overview of the
                        key questions around male development, the film features a boy
                        named Juan and the challenges he faces as he becomes a man:
                        domestic violence, his first sexual experience, his girlfriend’s
                        pregnancy, and his first job.
