Cleaner Production
Replacement of leaking steam valves: Leaking steam valves cause steam loss.
At Kaha factory 74 high-pressure leaking steam valves were identified (rang-
ing in size from 1.9 cm to 15.2 cm). At Edfina factory 98 leaking steam valves
were identified (ranging in size from 1.27 cm to 10.1 cm). It was assumed that
every defective valve leaks 7.5 kg steam per hour. This resulted in the savings
shown in Table 2.7.
Replacement of defective steam traps: Only some steam jacketed equipments
were fitted with steam traps, while others had defective steam traps resulting
in steam waste. Twenty-four steam traps were installed at Kaha and 35 steam
traps were installed at Edfina resulting in the savings shown in Table 2.8.
Installation of temperature controller on sterilizers: The sterilization of juice
and tomato paste was done by heated water with direct steam. Four temper-
ature controllers with automatic pressure regulators were installed in each
factory on steam lines used for sterilization to avoid steam loss. The tem-
perature controller regulates the flow of steam according to water temperature.
This resulted in the savings shown in Table 2.9.
