Possibility of leakage at 0.d. Good seal concentricity. Can be very
robust. Preferred for highest temperatures-over 150°C

Difficult manufacture. Use only when
danger from a misplaced spring is

Controlled flexibility and elastic properties. Good spring retention.
Efficient sealing. Heat and wear resistant

Rubber

Formerly much used, now obsolescent. Wear resistant, self-
lubricating-but poor and inconsistent sealing

Leather Assembled

The above variants are the important ones to the seal user or machine designer, apart from special seals for dirty conditions.
There are multitudinous detail modifications introduced by seal manufacturers, but for normal applications these can be
ignored.
