188 What Type of Leader Are You?

timely delivery, subpar analyses, and lack of follow-through deeply
        troubling.
With a vision of quality and a high regard for talent, One lead-
ers establish well-organized teams that are focused on practical,
clear, realistic, and purposeful goals. One leaders also prefer teams
in which roles are unambiguous, so that each member clearly
understands his or her area of responsibility. Because this is how
One leaders themselves prefer to operate, applying these same
principles to team leadership enables them to keep their teams
well organized and to maintain individual accountability.
One leaders place great emphasis on self-improvement; as a
result, their team culture is usually one of learning and growth.
Ones usually create processes that allow work to be coordinated

are sometimes initially intimidated by his capabilities. Once
they get to know him, however, they see his humility. Tim
definitely places the team’s well-being above his own, which
makes the team members respect him even more.”

One team leaders know that they are not perfect. They may
sometimes unintentionally appear to be overly critical—for exam-
ple, using a sharp tone of voice when giving feedback to a team
member about a minor issue. A related area is the One leader’s
tendency to offer opinions quickly, which may discourage some
team members from voicing their own ideas, particularly if the One
        leader’s opinion is negative.
In addition, although One leaders usually value fairness, they
may rely more on certain team members whom they know they
