250 CHAPTER 7 CREATIVE COMPOSITING
TIP Use Multiply blending mode on a duplicate layer to darken an underlying overexposed layer.
9. Click the triangle button on the Layers palette and choose Merge Linked from the palette menu.
The two temporary layers disappear, and you are left with a new cloudy Background layer.
Next, let’s reflect the clouds in the glazing. You’ll start by copying the background and mir-
roring the reflection. Then to confine the reflection to appear only in the windows, you’ll create
a clipping group. (See Chapter 1 for a review of clipping groups.)
10. Select the Background layer (now containing the cloudy sky image). Duplicate the Back-
ground layer (press Ctrl+J). Rename the new layer Reflection.
11. Choose Edit Transform Flip Horizontal to mirror the Reflection layer.
12. Drag the Reflection layer inside the Glazing layer set, just above the Glass Right layer (see
Figure 7.31).
13. Hold down the Alt key and position your mouse on the interface between layers Glass Right and
Reflection. Click when you see the clipping group cursor appear. The Reflection layer then fea-
tures a downward arrow pointing to the underlined Glass Right layer, which is acting as the base
of the clipping group. The reflection image now is revealed through Glass Right’s layer mask.
TIP If you move the Reflection layer, it stays within the boundaries of the glazing because it is part
of a clipping group.
14. Click the Reflection layer if it is not already selected, and change its opacity to 40% to dim the
reflection; otherwise the glazing would be a perfect mirror. Click the Glass Right layer, and
change its opacity to 75% to brighten the reflection slightly.
15. You can use effects on the clipped layer, just as you can on normal layers. Apply a Gradient
Overlay layer style effect to the Reflection layer. Choose Overlay Blend Mode, 75% Opacity,
select Black To White gradient, check Reverse, choose Linear Style, and set a –27° Angle.
Two other glass layers can use a similar treatment. To save time, duplicate the existing Reflec-
tion layer and then set up new clipping groups.
