            FIGURE 5.22 TFMC manufacturing process.

The TFMC was designed and fabricated in the EU by the AGAN consortium
using the ‘wind–react–insulate–transfer’ manufacturing process approved for
            ITER (Fig. 5.22).
A total of 3.9 t of ‘internal-tin’ Nb Sn strands have been used by Europa

Metalli to fabricate 900 m of a CICC for five double pancakes (DP) of TFMC.
The TFMC stage-by-stage testing was carried out in the TOSKA facility at FZK
(Karlsruhe) [10]. In 2000, the model coil was tested in a self-magnetic field,
and in 2002, in the background field of the European LCT (Large Coil Task)
magnet. The last testing permitted the simulation of the TFMC bending due to
ponderomotive interaction. The obtained test data enabled the optimisation of
the TFC design, fabrication process and operating modes.

            5.5.3 Model Insert Coils

Insert coils are intended to study the characteristics and to test the winding SCs
in conditions similar to ITER MS manufacturing and operating conditions, in-
